UK 2026: Latest Study, Work & Settlement Updates

The UK remains one of the most popular destinations for Indian students, with world-ranked universities and the unsponsored Graduate Route. But following the 2025 Immigration White Paper, the rules are tightening across study, work and settlement — and timing now matters more than ever. Here's a quick, useful roundup.

Work After Studies

  • The Graduate Route lets graduates stay and work — or look for work — with no job offer or sponsorship needed, in almost any job, at any salary, including self-employment.

  • Key change: the Graduate Route lasts two years for most non-doctoral graduates applying on or before 31 December 2026, reducing to 18 months for those applying on or after 1 January 2027, while PhD graduates keep three years. It cannot be extended.

  • To stay long-term you switch to the Skilled Worker visa (a sponsored role), which now requires B2-level English from 8 January 2026 (up from B1) and generally a minimum salary around £41,700, with a lower "New Entrant" rate available to recent graduates.

Study in the UK

  • Students need a Student visa, sponsored via a CAS from a licensed university, now issued as a digital eVisa.

  • Dependents: only PhD and postgraduate research students can bring dependents — most undergraduate and taught master's students cannot.

  • New for 2026: tougher student-visa compliance rules for universities took effect on 1 June 2026, making it harder for institutions to keep their sponsor licence. Looking ahead, an international student levy of £925 per student per year of study starts in August 2028.

Settlement (ILR) & Other Options

  • UK permanent residence is Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), normally after five years on a qualifying route like Skilled Worker. Importantly, time on the Graduate Route does not count toward the standard 5-year settlement clock — so the ILR timeline effectively starts once you switch to Skilled Worker.

  • Major proposed change: under "earned settlement" plans, the standard ILR qualifying period may rise from five to ten years, with faster routes for high earners and exceptional contributions. This was consulted on into 2026 and is expected to be finalised later in the year, so it isn't fixed yet.

  • A higher English standard (B2) for ILR is also set to apply from 26 March 2027.
