Spain 2026: Latest Study, Work & Residency Updates

Spain offers respected universities, a sunny Mediterranean lifestyle, and relatively affordable living — and a recent immigration reform has made it noticeably more student-friendly. Here's a quick, useful roundup for Indian students considering Spain in 2026.

Work After Studies

  • Graduates can apply for a 12-month job-search or business permit — the Residence Authorization for Job Search or Business Project — which lets non-EU graduates of a recognised Spanish institution stay for up to 12 months to look for a job or start a business. Apply before your student card expires.

  • Once you have a qualifying offer, you convert to a work and residence permit, either employed or self-employed (autónomo), ideal for graduates who want to be entrepreneurs or freelancers.

  • For higher earners there's the Highly Qualified Professional route, typically requiring a salary around €40,000 for graduates of prestigious institutions, or €54,000 for managerial roles. In-demand sectors include technology, business and healthcare.

Study in Spain

  • Non-EU students (including Indians) need a Type D long-stay student visa for programmes over 90 days. A major reform — Royal Decree 1155/2024, in force since May 2025 — improved the system: the visa is now granted for the full duration of the academic programme and includes authorisation to work up to 30 hours per week without extra procedures.

  • You'll need proof of financial means (referenced against Spain's IPREM, around €600 per month, with applicants advised to show roughly €8,000–10,000 per academic year), health insurance, and an apostilled criminal-record check for longer stays.

  • After arriving, you register your address at the local town hall (empadronamiento) and apply for your Foreigner Identity Card (TIE) at the police station.

PR & Other Residency Options

  • Non-EU residents can apply for long-term (permanent) residence after five years of continuous legal residence and work in Spain.

  • One crucial honest caveat: time spent on a student visa does not count toward permanent residency or citizenship — the clock effectively starts once you switch to a work or residence permit. So Spain is an excellent study and launch-pad destination, but the PR journey begins after graduation.

  • Spanish citizenship is generally available after 10 years of legal residence, and a residence permit allows visa-free travel across the Schengen Area.
