Mauritius continues to position itself as a welcoming, affordable destination for Indian students and professionals — and its Finance Act 2025 brought fresh updates to study, work and residency pathways. Here's a quick, useful roundup.

Work After Studies

  • Graduates from a recognised tertiary institution can apply for the Young Professional Occupation Permit (YPOP) — a combined work-and-residence permit valid for up to 3 years, applied for by the employer through the Economic Development Board (EDB).

  • Under the updated rules, the YPOP carries a minimum salary of MUR 25,000, and graduates can later move on to a full Professional Occupation Permit.

  • The Professional Occupation Permit now runs on a tiered system: ProPass requires a minimum salary of MUR 30,000 and Expert Pass requires MUR 250,000, both valid for up to 10 years.

Study in Mauritius

Mauritius keeps a simple, university-led student visa process, with applications submitted by your institution to the Passport and Immigration Office (PIO), and Indian students continue to enjoy a high approval rate.

  • All applicants must complete the standard medical clearance (including HIV, Hepatitis B and a chest X-ray), with a follow-up test required within a month of arrival.

  • Importantly, you cannot study or work on a tourist visa — the correct permit must be secured first.

PR & Other Residency Options

  • The Occupation Permit combines work and residence in one document, granting resident status for up to 10 years with renewal, across Professional, Investor and Self-Employed categories.

  • For long-term settlers, the 20-year Permanent Residence Permit (PRP) is available to permit holders who complete five years on a valid permit and meet the income thresholds.

  • A property-investment route also grants residence for a qualifying purchase of USD 375,000, though property registration costs are increasing from July 2026.

  • Note that Mauritius does not offer citizenship by investment, and that dependents — spouse, children and often parents — can usually be included on these permits.
