Malta 2026: Latest Study, Work & Residency Updates

Malta is a small but appealing destination — an English-speaking EU and Schengen member with affordable tuition, a safe Mediterranean lifestyle, and a fast-growing economy in iGaming, fintech and tourism. It works differently from the UK or Australia, though: there's no automatic post-study work visa, so planning matters. Here's a quick, useful roundup.

Work After Studies

  • Malta has no automatic post-study work visa — students switch from a student residence permit to a work-based residence permit. After graduating, you can apply for a temporary residence permit (commonly around six months) to look for a job in your field.

  • Once you have an offer, the main route is the Single Permit (combined work and residence for non-EU nationals), which takes about 2–3 months to process and is usually valid for one year, renewable annually. High-skill roles can use the faster Key Employee Initiative.

  • Job offers generally need to meet a minimum salary of around €1,200 per month, and hiring demand is strong in IT, gaming, finance and hospitality, where English-speaking graduates have an advantage.

Study in Malta

  • Non-EU students (including Indians) need an e-Residence Permit / National (D) visa for courses lasting more than 90 days, issued by Malta's immigration authority. The course must be at MQF level 5 or above, at the University of Malta or an officially authorised private college.

  • Leading institutions include the University of Malta (the oldest and largest), MCAST, the American University of Malta, and tourism/hospitality schools — most teaching in English.

  • The student visa is valid for up to 365 days; if your programme runs longer than a year, you renew your residence permit after arriving. Students can typically work up to 20 hours per week with an employment licence.

PR & Other Residency Options

  • Permanent residence is available after five years of continuous legal residence, but here's the key honest caveat: you must hold a work permit for at least five years — you cannot apply for PR while on a student visa, so the clock effectively starts after you transition to work.

  • PR requires stable income, health insurance, a clean record and integration, and the residence card brings visa-free travel within the Schengen Area. Citizenship by naturalisation generally follows after ten years.

  • Malta also offers other routes — the Global Residence Programme (flat-tax, property-based) and the Nomad Residence Permit for remote workers.
