Japan 2026: Latest Study, Work & Residency Updates

Japan combines globally respected universities, a safe and orderly society, and strong demand for skilled graduates in tech, engineering and research. For 2026, several rules have changed — including new language requirements and tighter permanent-residency criteria — so Indian students should plan carefully. Here's a quick, useful roundup.

Work After Studies

  • Japan has no automatic post-study work visa — graduates must change status from "Student" to a work visa such as Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services, Researcher or Instructor.

  • New for 2026: Students graduating in March 2026 to start work by April should submit their change-of-status application by January 31, 2026, and immigration has expanded a document-waiver program so more graduates can skip certain company paperwork.

  • Still job-hunting at graduation? Graduates of Japanese universities can switch to a "Designated Activities" status to stay and look for work for six months, renewable once (up to a year), with a school recommendation letter.

Study in Japan

  • International students hold the "Student" status of residence. Your school applies for a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) on your behalf — COE processing usually takes about 4 to 8 weeks — after which you collect your visa at a Japanese embassy and register at your local municipal office within 14 days of arrival.

  • New for 2026: From the October 2026 intake, applicants to language schools without a university degree must prove A1-level Japanese (via JLPT N5, NAT-Test, J.Test or an approved school assessment).

  • Students can take part-time work only with a separate permit (capped at 28 hours per week during term), and full-time during long scheduled breaks.

PR & Other Residency Options

  • Standard permanent residence requires 10 years of continuous residence, including at least 5 years on a work visa. Helpfully, student years count toward the 10-year total, though the separate 5-year work requirement only starts when you switch to a work visa.

  • A faster route exists for the Highly Skilled Professional (HSP) visa: 80+ points allows a PR application after just 1 year, and 70+ points after 3 years — and graduating from a Japanese university adds points.

  • New for 2026: Effective February 24, 2026, the ISA tightened PR rules so that applicants must generally hold the longest available period of stay (typically a 5-year visa) when applying, with a transitional grace period until March 31, 2027.
