Italy 2026: Latest Study, Work & Residency Updates
Italy pairs centuries-old academic prestige — from the 1,000-year-old University of Bologna to top-ranked Bocconi — with relatively affordable tuition and a growing range of English-taught programmes. For 2026, the process runs through Italy's official pre-enrollment portal, and graduates get a 12-month window to find work. Here's a quick, useful roundup.

Work After Studies
Graduates of Italian institutions can apply for a 12-month job-search residence permit (permesso per attesa occupazione / ricerca lavoro) to remain in Italy for up to 12 months to seek employment or start a business.
A key 2023 reform helps here: there are no annual quota restrictions on student-to-work conversions since the Cutro Decree, making it easier to convert once you have a job offer.
Two honest points: the job-search permit does not itself authorise you to work — work is only permitted after you convert it to a work permit, and Italy's 12-month window is shorter than Germany's 18-month route, so start job-hunting before graduation. Highly qualified graduates may instead target the EU Blue Card.

Study in Italy
Non-EU students (including Indians) need a Type D long-stay study visa for courses over 90 days, plus a residence permit (Permesso di Soggiorno) after arrival. The first mandatory step is pre-enrollment through the official UNIVERSITALY portal — the free government gateway recognised by all Italian universities and consulates.
You'll need to show financial means of about €10,179 per year and health insurance with minimum €30,000 coverage. After arriving, you must apply for your residence permit at Poste Italiane within eight working days.
Students can work up to 20 hours per week (1,040 hours per year) with a valid permit, alongside internships offered by universities.
PR & Other Residency Options
Non-EU residents can apply for permanent residence (the EU long-term resident permit) after five years of continuous legal residence, after which the card only needs a simple renewal every five years. Note that time spent on a student permit typically counts only partially toward this five-year clock.
Italy also offers an EU Blue Card route with easier family reunification, plus Investor (Golden Visa), Startup, and Digital Nomad permits.
A long-term benefit: an Italian residence permit lets you travel within the Schengen Area without a separate visa.
