Georgia 2026: Latest Study, Work & Residency Updates
Georgia (the Caucasus country, not the US state) has become a popular, affordable destination for Indian students — especially for medicine — thanks to English-medium degrees and low costs. But 2026 brings a major shift: Georgia has introduced a formal work-permit system for the first time. Here's a quick, useful roundup.

Work Updates (Major 2026 Change)
From March 1, 2026, Georgia introduced a mandatory work permit (a "right to work") — most foreign workers, including employees and the self-employed, now need a work permit, while permanent residence holders are exempt.
Employers must run a labour-market test, posting the vacancy on a government portal for 10 business days before applying, and the work permit pairs with a work residence permit (or a D1 visa from abroad).
There's a special track for tech talent: IT professionals can get a work permit for up to 3 years, while other fields are usually limited to 1 year. International students may also work part-time during their studies.

Study in Georgia
Indian students apply for a D-category (D3) student visa, valid for the duration of the program and renewable each academic year, with two main intakes in September and February.
Georgia is best known for affordable MBBS/MD degrees (tuition roughly USD 3,500–8,000/year, living USD 300–500/month), taught in English. For Indian students, NEET is mandatory and degrees from NMC-recognised, WHO-listed universities allow you to sit the FMGE/NExT to practise in India.
2026 update: Several state/public universities have shifted focus to local students, restricting new international admissions, so most Indian applicants now enrol at recognised private medical universities — making university verification more important than ever.
PR & Other Residency Options
Permanent residence is generally available after 10 years on a temporary residence permit — though periods of study and medical treatment do not count, so Georgia is primarily a study destination rather than a direct study-to-PR route.
For investors, an investment residence permit (from USD 300,000) can lead to permanent residence after five years, provided the investment and turnover criteria are maintained.
Family members of Georgian citizens have faster routes, and PR can later open a path toward citizenship.
